Garage door remote or keypad not working

If the wall button opens the door and the remote doesn't, the opener is fine. Start with the battery, then reprogram the remote to the opener's learn button. It's a few minutes of work, and it doesn't need a new opener.

Same-day, and the phone is answered any hour. Reprogramming is usually quick. Replacement remotes and receivers get quoted before we fit them.

What causes it

Flat battery

The obvious one, and the most common. Range drops off before it dies completely.

Fix: New battery of the right type.

Lost pairing

A power cut or a board reset can clear the stored remotes.

Fix: Reprogram to the opener's learn button.

Keypad code wiped

Outdoor keypads often lose the code after a battery change.

Fix: Re-enter the code at the opener.

Radio interference

LED bulbs in the opener are a common culprit, and so is a transmitter nearby.

Fix: Swap the bulb for one rated for garage door openers.

Failed receiver board

No remote works at all, wall button fine.

Fix: Receiver or board replacement.

Before you call

Worth trying

  • Test the wall button first
  • Change the battery
  • Try the remote standing right under the opener
  • Swap an LED bulb for an incandescent to rule out interference

Leave alone

  • Buy a new opener because a remote stopped working
