What usually fails
On a chain or belt unit the plastic drive gear inside the motor head strips first. You hear the motor run and the door doesn't move. That's a gear kit, not a new opener. After the gear, it's usually travel and force settings drifting out, safety sensors knocked out of line, or the logic board after a power surge.
The learn button tells us the generation
The color of the learn button on the back of the motor head says which remote system the unit uses. Yellow is the newer rolling code. Green, purple or orange is the older one. That color decides which remotes and keypads will pair, so it's the first thing we ask you to go look at.
Repair before replacement
A gear kit and a fresh pair of sensors usually buys a working unit several more years. Past about 20 years the board and the gear both start going, and rebuilding one stops making sense. We'll tell you which side of that line your opener is on.
